About this deal

Cycle Centre Congleton Limited 2021. Cyclestore is a trading name of Cycle Centre Congleton Limited. All Rights Reserved Company No. 05107467 | VAT No: 593 733 507 The widely accepted view is that special pedals are not required for cyclocross. One doesn’t really need specialist equipment for cyclocross, except for the bike, of course. A notable difference between cyclocross and other types of riding lies in the choice of pedals. For the most part, cyclocross participants tend to avoid the use of road pedals and shoes and would rather borrow clipless pedals and shoes that traditionally belong to the mountain biking world. Yes. You can use standard Shimano SPD cleats with Egg Beater pedals. Still, when your current cleats wear out, it might be a good idea to get Crank Brothers cleats. The difference in performance might be small, but anything that improves performance is worth it if you ask me.

Finally, you get more options for float (natural foot rotation while you ride) and release angle (the point at which it actually disengages) than you do with SPDs. More on this below. Performance The eggbeaters simple design gives the advantage of amazing mud shedding and 4 points of entry making it perfect for XC trail riding and cyclo cross. The Eggbeater 3 is an extreme durable MTB pedal fitted with the same needle bearings as crankbrothers flagship. The body and spring are completely made out of high quality and durable stainless steel, to ensure the perfect stability and a long lifespan. The unique pedal design makes it possible to clip in on 4 sides. The waterproof seals are improved and the eggbeaters design makes it almost impossible for mud and dirt to stay attached to your pedal. Crank Brothers has been making a bunch of cool components and accessories for years. They have a stellar reputation in the MTB world, including cross country and downhill. Plus, they sponsor a bunch of riders on the pro circuit. I think the brand is awesome.

When it comes to durability and reliability, Shimano pedals set the standard. For many who are just starting out in cyclocross, Shimano’s SPD- PD-M540 is the mountain bike pedal of choice. With a sturdy clip between the pedal and a hard-wearing metal cleat, as well as a design that allows mud to pass through the body of the pedal, the Shimano SPD pedal is an excellent option for cyclocross newcomers. If you’re not going to clip in, then we recommend Race Face Chester. I find that these pedals work best with Hold Fast straps. The Eggbeater 3s also come with spacers you can add to the pedal spindle in case the recess is too shallow, which could particularly be the case if your shoes wear down and would cause the shoe to rattle on the pedal. As it was, my selection of Giro and Shimano shoes and boots sat just fine with the Eggbeaters, as they do with SPDs.

Pedals can be a very personal choice and what works for me might not work for you. If there were one pedal system that worked for everyone there would be no need for any variety. You will only know for sure what works for you through trial and error. That said, the list I have provided here is an excellent guide to the best choices you might want to consider. One of the coolest things I see at the races are pit bikes. These are bikes with regular flat pedals that mechanics use just to get around. Since bike mechanics are on their feet a lot, they don’t want to be standing on cleats. Does Crank Brothers have a good reputation as a component brand? While the XTR pedals are better at mud clearance than the XTs, they don’t shed mud quite as effectively as the Time and Crank Bros pedals. Even though the consensus seems to be that the older, round retention bar design is superior to the current square bar design, I prefer the newer design. You can also change the release angle from 15 to 20 degrees by swapping the default cleats from one shoe to the other. And you can buy ‘easy release’ variants that have a 10-degree release angle. The smaller the release angle, the sooner your foot disengages as you turn your heel outwards.) Verdict
