About this deal

I confess when I first read this back in 1979 about a year after reading Dune for the first time I didn't particularly like it because it is very different, yes same characters, locations etc. This 60s simplicity is at risk of becoming as irrelevant as Adam West’s Batman in leotards when compared to Christian Bale’s psychopathic Dark Knight.

Dune is a deep and complex novel that takes in ecology, environmentalism, religion and the misuse of power and destiny. The Frank Herbert Dune Series Collection is a captivating set of six books that delves into a rich and complex science fiction universe.

It is a universe of ‘traps within traps’, of human computers, secretive witch-cults and fanatic warriors, all with their own intricate histories and intentions. Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors. So far ahead of its time when it was written it is still just as compelling as any of the more recent saga’s. On the point of death, they are rescued by a band for Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, who control Arrakis' second great resource: the giant worms that burrow beneath the burning desert sands.

It took me so long to figure out what I wanted to say about this book and I still have no clear idea. A third film adaptation directed by Denis Villeneuve is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2021. It would be many years after my first reading that the comments on the 60s drug culture which allegedly permeated the book made me go back and re-read it through somewhat more adult eyes, and capture this review for those readers who may look beyond the cinema release to (re-)visit the original work. However, despite the grand scale of Herbert’s fully formed universe, at its heart Dune is the story of a single boy, Paul Atreides, who finds himself caught in the web of a myth, centuries in the making. Having now just read Dune again 40 years later immediately followed by Dune Messiah I now get it, it can't be the same as Dune as it wouldn't work as a book. The length should not be a put-off to less experienced readers, it is a very good book that you won’t be able to put down.

He is to hold his right hand in a box that causes extreme pain; if he pulls back he will be killed by “the gom jabbar [which] kills only animals”. The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened. Many of Frank Herbert’s major characters have deductive capacities that rival Sherlock Holmses’s and speak like they’ve computed 500 possible lines of dialogue in a split second and then chose the most apt option – which is probably exactly what they’ve done, given that each of them underwent some form or other of rigorous mind-training. With almost limitless power and foresight, Leto seeks to safeguard humanity's future, but his rule is marked by enigmatic decisions and sacrifices.

While the first book has a good balance of action and politics, Messiah has a more slow burn political thriller as we see Paul Atritedes crowned as Emperor and his allies ruling the Imperium and dealing with the enemies.

Pena que não haja disponibilidade do livro em inglês com uma encadernação mais primorosa, uma vez que é uma obra para se manter na biblioteca e a encadernação disponível deixa muito a desejar. I have read about this book being the best Sci fi book ever and with the film being released soon, I had to check it out. For Dune they have commissioned Sam Weber, an artist who has previously worked on their editions of Lord of the Flies and Fahrenheit 451. Now, I don’t know about you, but I expect quality from something advertised as an anniversary edition. At this point I'm just amused that the publisher cared so little about the presentation of such a literary classic as Dune and I proceed with actually reading the book.
