About this deal

It usually means the author is finding the formula a bit of a chore and is trying to amuse himself at the expense of reader.

I have all three parts of this Promise Falls trilogy and I won't be stopping reading until I have finished all three. He has barely squared his desk blotter when he finds himself unemployed and living with his parents in his childhood home. When David Harwood is asked to look in on his cousin Marla, who is still traumatised after losing her baby, he thinks it will be some temporary relief from his dead-end life. I think that each character was very well done with a distinct voice and each point of view added to the overall story. There are clues generously given along the way without revealing too much, and I eventually had an idea in my head what had happened.

But be forewarned that it will be important to remember them and the audio performers help in how they distinguish them. First and most devastating his wife has passed away, the newspaper he works for is going under, and then he is forced to move back home with his 9 year old son. BROKEN PROMISE, the debut novel in Linwood Barclay’s now well-known PROMISE FALLS trilogy is best described as lying in the center of a triangle bounded by suspense thriller, psychological thriller and horror! David was sure Marla was incapable of inflicting injury on a person – but the circumstantial evidence was damning.

It seems as if the town is sure to collapse upon itself either from corruption or decay, or a combination of the two. I did figure out one of the crimes before the end, but I was happy to discover that I was not completely right. Detective Barry Duckworth, for example, is one of the people who you should pay attention to from the first time you read the name.

It is unpredictable, especially in this case the wider plot that will obviously continue - here I was especially fond of David as an anchor character for everything else, he is very likeable and easy to travel the road with so I hope he continues to be our main point of reference. Aunt Agnes, the indomitable matriarch of the Pickens clan swiftly attempt to steer Marla clear of trouble, engaging the best lawyer and stressing the mental fragility of her daughter's state.

My only other Barclay read is Tap on the Window, but that book and this novel are enough for me to see that Mr.

During his inquiries David speaks to the dead woman's husband and doctor, and tries to find the baby's nanny - who seems to be missing. A true master is back on the scene, and this is another book that can go directly into the suspense lover’s hall of fame. The real mother to the baby is found dead and suddenly David is in a quandary about Marla's angel story. Marla has been through some traumatic events—an online reviewer, she got pregnant by a younger college student, her mom (David’s aunt) did not care for. The loose threads in the run up to the close of Broken Promise are an excellent reason to continue with this trilogy and I shall be with it all the way.I know that the general consensus amongst the readers of this novel was that stretching over five-hundred pages it was a little lengthy, but in contrast to that opinion, I rather admired the gradual slow burn of Broken Promise and the livelihood of the unfortunate denizen who habituate the town.
