About this deal

The too winsome by far instrumental “Le Clochard (Bread)” is moldy guitar strum; on follow-up instrumental “Janis” the flute does the heavy lifting. Focus II was recorded from 13 April–14 May 1971 at Sound Techniques and Morgan Studios with Mike Vernon as their producer. The passages Thijs has created roll out as a giant canvas for Jan Akkerman to color upon with bombastic tones as loud and punchy as an atomic blast yet fully in Jan's control as the blast settles into particles of drifting dust swirling and swaying, drifting and dancing back to earth. It's not an Album for anyone who wants to have a singalong because there are no vocals whatsoever but it's purely one of the best instrumental renditions ever produced. Overall, it's not a bad album at all, but there's a lot of better progressive rock albums out there. White Blue Horizon labels with text in blue, ⚭ Stereo to the left and lower-case Britico below it, unlike Moving Waves which has BRITICO in caps. As is the case with all Focus CD re-issues on Red Bullet, why couldn't the company spend a bit more on including the original back sleeve photo plus some notes on how the album was made, interviews, dates.

The album is certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling 500,000 copies in the US.

The group wanted to incorporate an element of humour in the track because they felt it was missing in the rock genre.

Within the framework of a kick-ass rock song you’ll find a killer hook, a pair of whizz-bang guitars solos, “yodeling gnomes” (thanks for the phraseology go out to my Dutch pal, Martijn de Vries), non-lexicable vocals, whistling, tasty jazz flute, and to quote Martijn again, “a drummer who makes me want to head butt the Eiffel Tower. Once again, the combined talents of Thijs van Leer, Jan Akkerman and drummer Pierre van der Linden work a truly special kind of magic. It went on to peak at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart, [6] number 8 on the US Billboard 200, [7] and number 4 on the Dutch Album Top 100 chart. No one in English and America, and I’m including Frank Zappa, could have created a song so utterly off the wall. I bought this CD to save any further wear on my original vinyl LP which I bought in the early 70's just after the shortened single version of "Hocus Pocus" had been a belated hit in the UK. Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term.

Of course, Akkerman and van Leer were exceptional in writing to each others’ strengths as musicians: Akkerman’s “Janis” is really a showcase for van Leer’s multitracked flute parts, while Akkerman totally steals the show with his guitar arpeggios on van Leer’s fusion track “Focus II. Eruption” includes tributes to classical composers and other Dutch fusion acts, and an intense drum solo by Buddy Rich disciple van der Linden. Such is also the case with "Eruption" which took up the whole of side 2 on the original LP and which sounds great on CD. The Dutch prog band Focus' debut album is a progressive rock album too but with their second studio effort Moving Waves they adopted even more complex form of prog rock. The grim specter of Keith Emerson hangs over the proceedings, but you also get, amongst other things, Pink Floyd atmospherics, an unconscionably long drum solo, lush easy listening choral hokum, one extended (and very cool) guitar solo that would have sounded right at home on an early Steely Dan LP, some Gregorian chanting, an amazing jam, and a section Elton John may or may not have lifted for “Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lie Bleeding. The Dutch quartet’s second full-length album, Moving Waves —alternately titled Focus II —is one of the least-probable success stories of the early part of the 1970s. Moving Waves” is a Keith Emerson doppelganger right down to its pseudo-classical piano and portentous vocals by resident genius Thijs van Leer.
